• ArtWeld Gabion

The ArtWeld Gabion beats the competition with faster erection time and baskets that last longer and keep their shape.  Our gabions will save you time when it comes to backfilling.  Unlike other gabions, ours utilize wire stiffeners at all exterior corners of the structure to reinforce the sides, avoid bulging, and also create a larger opening for easy backfill.

We’ve seen numerous uses and applications for our gabions that are so varied; it seems the designs are only limited by the imagination.

Easily Shipped & Quickly Assembled

Standard gabion sizes are shipped flat and partially assembled on some edges.  They are either banded together or on a pallet, and shipped via a common carrier box van or a flatbed truck, depending on the order size and delivery location.  Upon delivery, the gabion can be unfolded, sides stood up and temporarily fastened with the included hog rings, then permanently fastened with the included spiral binders, fill with rocks, close the lid, and spiral the lid shut.

Typically, a 6’x3’x3’ gabion takes less than 5 minutes to make ready for filling.

Structurally Superior

By using welded wire mesh, our ArtWeld Gabions are stronger and hold their shape better than other types. The strength of the welded wire mesh also offers the following advantages:

  • Allows for careful machine filling
  • Easy to hold the alignment of the face
  • Allows for larger sizes to be manufactured (up to 24’ long x 6’ wide x 3’ tall), which means fewer seams to be joined in the field.
  • Simple field cutting to fit site conditions, without compromising the structural strength of the basket.

It is not uncommon for us to supply our ArtWeld Gabions as a fix after a wash out / storm event or failure of other types of gabions.

What is your lead time for new gabion orders?

The materials lead time can vary from 1-3 weeks for delivery, depending on sizes, quantity, and the time of year.  Lead time will greatly depend on our production line and schedule at the time you place your order.  If you order sizes we have in stock, lead time will be faster (about 1 week or less).  When you return a signed quote, indicate your desired delivery date in the space provided and we will do our very best to work with you and meet your schedule.

What type of wire mesh do you stock for your gabions?

The wire mesh we stock for our gabions has a 3”x3” spacing and comes in either:

  • 9 gauge, class 3 galvanized
  • 9 gauge, non-galvanized
  • 11 gauge, class 3 galvanized

Other wire types can sometimes be special ordered for custom baskets, but will have a longer lead time and be more costly than our standard stock wire mesh.

What are the typical gabion sizes you stock for your gabions?

Standard stock sizes include (dimensions in order of length x width x height):

  • 12’ x 3’ x 3’
  • 9’ x 3’ x 3’
  • 6’ x 3’ x 3’
  • 3’ x 3’ x 3’

Internal baffles are on 3’ centers.

We're a manufacturer, so we can also make many sizes to order.  The wire mesh size we stock for our gabions has a 3"x3" spacing, so if your dimensions are divisible by 3" we can usually make that size.

I want to order the weathered, rusty-colored gabions, but your quote says these are black.

The wire we stock for our gabions is either galvanized or non-galvanized.  We often reference the non-galvanized as black, which is a common industry term, but it is not actually the color black.  Non-galvanized (a.k.a. black, or brite basic) is raw steel and a rusty-colored wire.  The galvanized wire has a metallic zinc coating.  See the photos below which show galvanized gabions on the first 2 and non-galvanized on the last 2:

I need a unique gabion size and need to find out what sizes you sell.

We're a manufacturer, so we can make many sizes to order, in addition to standard sizes we typically keep in stock.  The wire mesh size we stock for our gabions has a 3"x3" spacing, so if your dimensions are divisible by 3" we can usually make that size.

  • Standard stock sizes include (dimensions in order of length x width x height):
  • 12’ x 3’ x 3’
  • 9’ x 3’ x 3’
  • 6’ x 3’ x 3’
  • 3’ x 3’ x 3’

Internal baffles are typically on 3’ centers.

What size rock do you recommend to fill the gabion baskets?

4 – 8” rock is recommended for the gabion fill.  The wire mesh size we stock for our gabions has a 3"x3" spacing, so the rocks need to be larger than the 3” opening to be contained.  Larger than 4 – 8” rock can create voids and smaller can spill out through the openings.

How much rock do I need to fill the gabion baskets?

Typically about 1.5 tons (3000 lbs) of rock is needed for each cubic yard of gabion.  However, this should be confirmed with the quarry or rock source, as it would depend on the type of rock and its density / weight.

For example:  A 6’x3’x3’ basket = 2 CY = 6000 lbs of rock

For installing gabions on a slope, do they need to be stepped or can they be laid directly on the slope?

Either way – they can be installed stepped or directly on the slope.  If doing it on a slope, it is best to start from the bottom and work your way up so that the bottom one(s) can support the load of the baskets in front.

How do I install gabions for a curved wall?

See the detail below for fitting gabions to a curve.  The end panel of one basket can be removed to insert the joining basket inside, and the exposed faces can be overlapped or trimmed to fit.  Our gabions do not have rounded faces, but curves can be achieved with chords of the basket lengths provided.

Alternatively, for tighter curves, flat sheets of gabion wire can be supplied for on-site assembly.  Below is a detail drawing showing this method of constructing curved gabions.  Essentially, all the components shown could be supplied to assemble a curved gabion on site, rather than square baskets that would be trimmed to fit the curve.
Can a standard submittal package be provided?
